Arthroscopy allows for the visualization of the wrist surfaces and associated areas. It is one of the recommended methods for the inspecting the integrity of bones, ligaments and cartilages. It also helps in the reduction of fractures in the wrist bones.

Arthroscopy can be done either for diagnosis or for treatment purposes.

Diagnostic arthroscopy: Arthroscopy can used be in conditions where a wrist pain continues for several months despite of non-surgical treatment. The procedure can also help in analyzing the causes of wrist pain.

Prior to arthroscopic surgery, following methods might be done:

  • Conducting physical examination in the hand & wrist.
  • Analysis of medical history.
  • Performing tests that can help to locate the pain. These tests are called provocative tests. During these procedures, the wrist and hand is moved in various positions to reproduce the pain felt.
  • Performing imaging tests on hand & wrist like X-rays, MRI etc.

Arthroscopic treatment: A number of conditions can be rectified using arthroscopy. Some of the conditions that can be rectified include:

  • Wrist fractures: When a wrist fracture occurs, small fragments can exist between the wrist portions. Removal of these fragments can be done through arthroscopy.
  • Ganglion cysts: They are structures that commonly grow between 2 bones of the writs. These cysts are said to arise from a stalk. Through arthroscopic procedures, the stalk can be removed which further reduces the recurrence rate of the ganglion cyst formation.
  • Acute wrist pain: Arthroscopy can find a suitable solution for severe pain in the wrist. Possibility exists cartilage damage, inflammation etc. These conditions can be suitably rectified.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: The syndrome is characterized by the sensation of numbness and tingling in the hand.
