Knee replacement surgery
In this surgical intervention, damaged knee parts are resurfaced. After sedating the patient with anesthesia, the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and with the help of new plastic and metal implants, the alignment and function of the knee are restored. The incision is either sutured or stapled surgically. A drainage tube is placed in the operated site to collect the fluid. A bandage is applied. Normally, knee joint replacement will take 1-2 hours.
Post-surgical procedure
Pain medicines will be prescribed for a short-time after the surgery. The patient may be advised to decrease leg swelling and prevent blood clots. Ankle and foot movement is encouraged immediately after the surgery to improve the blood flow.
The physiotherapist will teach knee exercise from the next day of surgery to improve mobility, reduce pain and better life quality. The patient can resume normal activities within 4-6 months and can start to do low-potent activities.
