Reverse total shoulder replacement is yet another type of shoulder replacement. Reverse total shoulder replacement is an option for people who have:
- Fully torn rotator cuffs with severe weakness in the arm
- Severe arthritis and rotator cuff tearing
- Had a previous shoulder replacement that has failed
In this procedure, the socket and metal ball are switched i.e. a metal ball is fixed to the shoulder bone and a plastic socket is inserted to the upper arm bone. This enables the patient to use the deltoid muscle instead of the damaged rotator cuff to lift the arm.
